Brighter Kensington & Chelsea Winners, again!

Meanwhile Wildlife Garden has won the Brighter Kensington & Chelsea Scheme’s Wildlife Garden Category for the 4th consecutive year.  This is a great achievement for all the trainees, volunteers and staff who work to create this wonderful project.

The Mind Skills Development Service’s horticultural and wildlife gardening course is taught in practice on site at Meanwhile Wildlife Garden. The wildlife garden is part of a greater public access community garden which runs alongside the canal and in the shadow of Trellick Tower in the north of the borough. The trainees work to plan, develop and maintain the wildlife garden for public enjoyment whilst learning a range of horticultural skills including: plant identification, propagation from seeds and cuttings, composting, soil preparation, planting, garden construction and maintenance and wildlife habitat creation.  The course is City & Guilds accredited.

The Brighter Kensington and Chelsea Scheme, founded in 1953, is a registered charity which exists to ”encourage horticulture in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in particular by awarding prizes in open competitions to the residents of the Borough”. Through their work they contribute to the Royal Borough’s success in the Britain in Bloom and London in Bloom competitions, where community involvement is increasingly valued in the judging.

The climax of the Scheme’s year is the Annual Prize-giving held at the Town Hall and presided over by the Mayor of Kensington & Chelsea. Every summer our numerous competition entrants make a great contribution to the green look of the Royal Borough. There are competition categories for everyone: garden patios, balconies and window boxes of private houses and flats, schools, garden squares and of course the wildlife garden category.
